2014 24 Hours of Le Mans: Nissan ZEOD RC retires 5 laps in

Nissan's EV racer Nissan ZEOD RC Le Mans challenge had a harsh result after retiring on the 5th lap.

GT Academy winner Wolfgang Reip who served as the starting driver managed to build up five laps. But after 23 minutes, the car could not run anymore. According to Nissan, the cause of the problem is the existing parts of the gearbox system and that there was no problem related to the new electric motor technology.

Nissan have set up two goals upon entering the Le Mans challenge with ZEOD RC. First is to reach a speed of 300km in the Mulsanne Straight and the other one is to achieve one lap of the Le Mans course only with electric power.

Nissan achieved one of its goals during the preliminary session that took place last Thursday night. Driver of ZEOD RC Satoshi Motoyama reached a speed of 300km at the first chicane before he could reach Mulsanne Straight. The other goal was also achieved after Reip managed to run the entire 13.6km course with the electric power alone during the morning warm-up on the day of the finals.

Nissan will return in the 2015 Le Mans race under LMP1 class aiming for overall victory against the said veterans, Audi, Toyota, and Porsche.
