Maserati are apparently working on a new, more hardcore sports car to take on the Porsche 911. At the moment Maserati’s lineup include the luxurious Quattroporte and the GranTurismo sports tourer. Currently Maserati’s most powerful and sporting vehicle is the Maserati GranTurismo MC Stradale. But even that is held back by its size and weight meaning it’s better suited to long distance mile-chomping than back-road blasts.
Auto Express say that Maserati’s new car, possibly named the GranSport, is based on the upcoming Alfa Romeo 4C. That means a mid-engine layout, and Ferrari have been tasked with developing a turbocharged V6 engine for the car. 450 horsepower is the target figure, and as a further boost to performance the new Maserati will be significantly lighter than the GranTurismo.
Auto Express say engineering highlights for the new car include a carbon fiber chassis and a Ferrari-derived seven-speed twin-clutch gearbox. Provisional performance numbers include a sub-4 second 0-60 mph time and a 190 mph top speed.

The new Maserati could be on sale by 2015. The price is said to match the car against the likes of the 911 and Audi R8 V8.
