Daihatsu Motor Company underwent a complete makeover for its Copen, a mini convertible in its 12th year since it debuted, and released them for sale on June 19. The frame on this new model has become stiffer by employing their newly developed, skeletally structured D-Frame. Moreover, the best part about the new Daihatsu Copen is its body panel which can be changed to customize your own designs.
The all-new Copen was based on the concept of “change” and underwent improvements to all facets from production to sales in order to make its mark on the stagnant market for domestic sports cars.
The vehicle released by Daihatsu this time is its standard model, the Copen Robe. The name “Robe” was chosen to symbolise a skeleton wearing its outer panel like clothing. An assortment of parts for the new model including its body panel in addition to the car’s bonnet, front & rear bumper, front & rear fender, trunk hood, fuel cap, and rocker are replaceable after purchasing the vehicle. Additional parts such as headlights are expected to be added to this list in the near future.
Sustaining all these parts is the Copen’s new skeletal structure. By connecting the front, side, rear, and floor seamlessly together, its flexural rigidity and torsional rigidity have been increased significantly by triple and 1.5 times as much, respectively.
The dimensions of its exterior are 3,395 x 1,475 x 1,280mm (total length x total width x total height) and has a wheelbase of 2,230mm. Although the length, width, and wheelbase of this new model are the same as its previous model due to its compactness, the total height has been extended by 35mm.
The Daihatsu Copen is equipped with MacPherson struts on its front suspension with torsion beam on the rear. It’s been exclusively tuned to offer a comfortable and sporty ride in addition to its impressively stable handling.
The engine is a 3-cylinder DVVT turbo that produces excellent acceleration by running on full torque from low speeds which can only be done with sports cars.
The price of the Copen Robe is ¥1,798,200 for the CVT model and ¥1,819,800 for manual transmission. The X model (a tentative name) which inherited its design from the KOPEN future included Xmz, a concept car launched at the Tokyo Motor Show, is scheduled to debut in fall of 2014.
