2014 Nurburgring 24 Hours: Subaru WRX STI captures top spot on first day of qualifying

The first day of official qualifying for the 24 Hours Nurburgring endurance race began at 6:45pm local time on June 19 under chilly and cloudy conditions. Carlo van Dam recorded the fastest time of 9 min 6 sec on the opening lap of qualifying and improved his qualifying time from last year by 7 seconds. He drives for Team STI who is competing in the SP3T class with their WRX STI NBR Challenge 2014 race car, based on the all-new WRX STI.

Soon after Team STI recorded the fastest time, it began to rain and the teams had no choice but to concede the rest of qualifying with the race course becoming completely wet in a matter of seconds. It stopped raining at around 10pm but the session was ended with the track still being fairly wet.

STI’s general manager, Hideharu Tatsumi said, “It’s gone pretty well up to now. According to my calculations, I had a good feeling that we would be able to achieve 9 min 8 sec for our fastest time. Thanks to Carlo, not only did we achieve that but exceeded it. Honestly, I’m relieved because this is the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work to produce a fast chassis. Moreover, we were also able to check our wet setup because of the rain so it turned out to be a pretty good day.”
