The 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show is rapidly turning into the 2011 Frankfurt Electric Car Show. So farVolkswagen, Fisker, Smart, Audi and BMW, have announced that they will be bringing along vehicles with no need for tailpipes. And now Vauxhall (or Opel if you’re on the European continent) have released the preliminary details on their electric powered offering which was first teased just two days ago.
The Vauxhall/Opel RAK e concept is a battery-powered electric vehicle with a 60 mile range and a 75 mph top speed. The RAK e has a tandem seating layout, which allowed the designers to keep the vehicle’s bodywork narrow and more aerodynamic. The lightweight construction – which is said to be roughly a third of a modern compact car – helps maximise the available power and range.
Vauxhall/Opel are hoping that the RAK e will appeal to younger drivers and those on a tight budget. But given the fact electric cars are currently considerably more expensive than their fossil-fuel burning competitors, it’s hard to see how they can keep the costs within a price bracket that will appeal to a significant proportion of younger/poorer drivers.
