Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe – all-new luxury two-door coupe replaces CL-Class

Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe
What do you get if you remove the rear two doors from an S-Class? Well, up until recently all you’d get is one very enraged S-Class owner. But now, there’s another option. The all-new S-Class Coupe.
The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe will be making its worldwide debut at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show in March. And just like the four-door S-Class sedan, it’s packed with gadgets and technology. The car is designed to act as a replacement for the CL-Class – which was itself a replacement for the S-Class Coupe some 20 or so years ago.
Ola Källenius, Member of the Board of Management, Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars said of the car: “The breathtaking design of the Concept S-Class Coupe marked by sporty-classic proportions and sensual purity is transferred to the series-production S-Class Coupe virtually unaltered. The large coupe has always been the supreme pinnacle of our model range and that’s why it’s now called the “S-Class” again.”

The exterior design of the S-Class Coupe is pretty different to the 4-door S-Class. It isn’t just a case of removing one set of doors and bringing the wheelbase in a bit. The front end is characterised by a completely different grille and new headlights – including optional headlights which feature 47 Swarovski crystals. The rear too is very different, with more wider, flatter tail lights, and a sportier bumper.
With a wheelbase of 2945 mm, the S-Class Coupé is 5027 mm long, with a width of 1899 mm and a height of 1411 mm. Making it slightly shorter, wider and lower than the previous CL-Class.

The interior has more in common with the S-Class sedan, with a different yet easily recognisable dashboard and instrument panel layout. It has, unsurprisingly, a very high-quality feel, with fine materials, trim and color combinations. In front of the armrest, the touchpad (optional) can be found, with its black high-sheen surface and chrome-look surround. As on a smartphone, the touchpad allows all the head-unit functions to be operated using finger gestures. The touchpad also permits letters, numbers and special characters to be entered in handwriting – in any of the head unit’s languages.
The car which will debut at the Geneva Motor Show will be the S 500 Coupe. This model will be powered by a 4.7 litre, twin-turbocharged V8 which develops 455 horsepower and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque. More models will join the S-Class Coupe range shortly after its debut.
