This year’s LA Design Challenge required the contestants to design a vehicle which would star in a fictional Hollywood movie. Six design studios from around the world submitted concepts for the competition. Honda, Subaru, Hyundai, Mercedes-Benz, Smart and Maybach all took part, but it was the dinky little Smart 341 Parkour concept which drove away with the top prize.
The Smart 341 Parkour concept was conceived for a movie in which a roving city reporter, Annie Angle, tries to solve the mystery of missing robot grannies. According to Smart’s description of the made-up movie: “Annie sets off on a journey to solve the mystery of the missing Grannies and to earn her first, potentially career-making, front page news article. Her Smart 341 Parkour vehicle plays a key role in this private investigation, providing both effective transportation and favourable sleuthing capabilities.”
One of the 2011 LA Design Challenge organisers said of this year’s competition: “This year’s theme presented these designers with creative challenges like never before. Not only were studios tasked with designing a futuristic Hollywood vehicle, but also the complex plots within which they starred. The Smart 341 Parkour captured the essence of the Design Challenge by combining innovation and functionality with an adventurous plot.
