Lamborghini Egoista Concept

Men in dark suits, in dark sunglasses, in a darkened room, applauding their own work really isn’t  a good look. Call it the pinnacle of douchery if you will. But that’s just how Lamborghini chose to reveal their surprise 50th birthday present to themselves.

The concept, called the Egoista, which means “selfish” in Italian, is a single seat hyper car with stying inspired by the deadly and stealthy Apache attack helicopter. Sounds promising.

Yet somehow the Egoista somehow manages to take Lamborghini’s stealth aircraft inspired design language and turn the dial up so far the system can’t handle it and overloads. In my book Lamborghinis should be mad, fast, and effortlessly cool – in that order. TheAventador J is a prime example. The Egoista tries way too hard. It’s a bit like those tangerine-colored guys you see wearing fake tan who are unable to accept the fact they don’t have the body to carry off a muscle shirt anymore. You know the type.

There are however a few elements of the Egoista’s design which taken individually are pretty decent. The narrow cockpit for example, with its tilt-forward canopy is pretty awesome, as is the insanely jagged rear end and slatted engine cover. Even the three-pronged front end with its tiny little sinister headlights poking out from under the bodywork is worth an honorable mention. The Egoista’s real problem lies in the middle, where it seems numerous holes have been cut at pointless angles, and the bodywork itself is so mismatched it looks like someone on the assembly line was fed up and just trying to get through his last day on the job.

Judging by the proportions, and the fact the Lamborghini Egoista is powered by a 5.2 litre V10, it’s reasonable to assume the car is based on a Gallardo platform. And with the Gallardo well overdue for a replacement it’s possible some of the Egoista’s styling ideas might make into the next car – albeit after some significant toning down.

It’s either that or lamborghini’s designers managed to get into the drinks cabinet again. Which might also explain the dark sunglasses.

UPDATE: While the exterior isn’t worthy of a first year Transport Design student, the interior is actually pretty amazing !
