2013 Aston Martin DBS Coupe Centennial by Zagato

Zagato have just announced a couple of special edition, one-of-a-kind supercars based on a pair of Aston Martin’s latest models. The headline act, merely because it is based on the higher-performance DBS, is the Aston Martin DBS Coupe Zagato Centennial.  The car was built to mark Aston Martin’s 100th anniversary, it was comissioned by an unnamed Japanese entrepreneur.
According to Zagato, the  Aston Martin DBS Coupe Zagato Centennial is an exotic blend of Aston Martin DNA mixed with Italian flair. The car features one of Zagato’s most identifiable design highlights, a double bubble roof. Norihiko Harada, Zagato’s Chief Designer describes the project; “Redesigning the DBS was a difficult job. The DBS is already one of the most beautiful modern sports cars around. Our challenge was to bring sporty styling together with a more Mediterranean luxury GT feel, all with typical Zagato quality.”
Personally I would have hoped for better considering the car they were starting with – and the fact this is supposed to be one of Italy’s finest automotive design firms. It has a bit of a clunky look about it, and it looks more like a poorly executed retro-modern take on the Volvo P1800 than a 21st century Aston Martin.
The second Zagato creation marking Aston Martin’s centenary is the Aston Martin DB9 Spyder Centennial. And yep, it’s based on a DB9 Volante convertible. This car was created for Peter Read, an American car collector. The story for this project begins over 10 years ago, when Dr. Ulrich Bez approved a design for the DB7 Zagato. All 99 examples of this car were sold at the Paris Motor Show that year before production had even begun. The same team which came up with that car also designed the DB9 Spyder Zagato Centennial.
Peter Read said of his new toy: “The DB9 Spyder Zagato Centennial perfectly merges Aston Martin and Zagato’s DNA by combining the elegance of design, typical of Zagato, with the soul, power and prestige of Aston Martin, all developed over the last 100 years. This car personifies the timelessness of the Aston Martin/Zagato marque.”
