At the Auto Expo in New Delhi, India (Feb 5-11), Volkswagen unveiled an updated version of the Taigun SUV concept. The vehicle on display at New Delhi is said to be an advanced version of the near-production SUV. Compared to the first conceptual design – presented in Sao Paulo, Brazil – the new Taigun concept features a new rear section with outside-mounted spare wheel. This was apparently one of the main requests from prospective customers around the world, that there should be fast access to the spare without having to empty the cargo area first.
Powering the Volkswagen Taigun concept is a fuel-efficient 1.0-litre turbocharged direct injection engine which produces 110 horsepower @ 5,000 rpm. Average fuel consumption is just 4.7 l/100km (110 g/km CO2). This enables a range of around 620 miles (1,000 kilometres) with a full 11 gallon (50 litre) fuel tank.
The surprisingly lightweight Taigun, just 998 kgs (2200 lb), is able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 9.2 seconds – not quick, but adequate. The top speed is 115 mph (186 km/h).

The latest Volkswagen Taigun concept is 3,859 mm long; with mounted spare wheel, it is 3,995 mm; the width of the SUV is 1,728 mm and the height 1,570 mm (with roof rails 1,605 mm).
Volkswagen haven’t mentioned anything yet about prices, availability, when or where the Taigun will go on sale. But the latest concept is a fairly good indicator of what the company’s all-new budget small SUV will look like, and what sort of drivetrains it will come equipped with.
