Citroen C4 Cactus – lighter, smarter, cheaper

Citroen C4 Cactus
It’s a full seven years since Citroen first used the Cactus name on a concept vehicle – with the introduction of the original Citroen C-Cactus concept in 2007. More recently the company unveiled another Cactus concept at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show. And now they’ve pulled the covers off the production version.
Called the Citroen C4 Cactus, the all-new model is claimed to offer more comfort, practicality, economy and technology than its predecessors. It’s over 200 kgs (440 lbs) lighter than the current C4, and powered by the latest generation of fuel-sipping engines it offers up to 91 MPG with CO2 emissions from just 82g/km.
In terms of design it certainly stands out from the crowd. The styling has changed massively from the original 2007 concept, but it’s very closely modeled on last year’s concept. Part French-chic, part futuristic family car, the C4 Cactus looks like a good all-round family car.

The Citroen C4 Cactus also features a clever idea which might help reduce the scourge of door dings and bumper scuffs. Fitted to the sides of the car and the bumpers are little rubber panels Citroen calls Airbumps. The Airbumps break up the otherwise smooth bodylines of the car and are available in four colors (Black, Grey, Dune and Chocolate), they can be matched with the ten body colors and three choices of interior trim (Stone Grey Ambiance, Habana Highlight and Purple Highlight) to offer a wide range of customisation options. Above all they provide real day-to-day protection, as the supple TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) skin comprises air capsules to absorb impacts.
Inside, the Citroen C4 Cactus features a 7-inch touchscreen as standard, which controls functions such as the air conditioning, entertainment system, navigation, telephone and driving aids (reversing camera, park assist and cruise control).
The New Citroën C4 Cactus also boasts a large panoramic sunroof featuring advanced heat protection designed to filter light and reflect heat.
Citroen haven’t yet commented on specific drivetrain options, or pricing yet, saying only than the overall running costs of the new C4 Cactus are almost 20% less than comparable models. Citroen also say they will be offering a range of purchase options designed to make buying more affordable – including flat-rate monthly payments, or milage-based payments.
