414-HP Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R

One of the vehicles which will be on display at the Toyota stand during the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show will be the Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R. The car is based on a three-door production model Yaris, and that’s where the similarities end. Because in place of the standard Yaris Hybrid drivetrain is a motorsport-developed hybrid setup which makes use of a Toyota Motorsport-designed race-ready turbocharged four-cylinder engine, and no less than three electric motors.
The 1.6 litre internal combustion engine produces 235 horsepower and delivers it all to the front wheels. Meanwhile on the rear axle are two 60 horsepower electric motors, one for each wheel. The two electric motors work as electric generators when the car is braking, and assist the engine during acceleration.

The level of power depends on the duration of energy delivery required. So, when the Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R is running in “road” mode, the supercapacitor releases energy for a maximum 10 seconds per charge, and the total power of the two electric motors is reduced to 40bhp. In “track” mode, the motors reach a combined maximum of 119bhp for up to five seconds per charge, reflecting the more frequent braking and acceleration in circuit driving.
A third 60bhp motor is located between the engine and six-speed sequential transmissions. This operates as a generator, both during deceleration to feed power to the supercapacitor, and during acceleration to power the rear electric motors.
The rear electric motors can adjust the torque distribution between the left and right rear wheels in order to improve the handling when cornering. Depending on the radius of the curve, the system can send more torque to the outside rear wheel, allowing higher entry speed into middle-speed bends; apply more braking force to the inside wheel in fast curves; or even brake and accelerate each wheel independently in slow bends to adjust the yaw effect for a better line, and to limit steering angle and understeer.
Despite the exciting prospect of a Yaris Hybrid being able to humble most other vehicles on the road. The chances of the Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R making it to production are stupendously small.
