When Mercedes introduced the CLS-Class in 2003, they not only added a new model to their lineup, they also created a whole new vehicle segment, the four-door coupe. Now just when other other manufacturers are starting to get their first-generation four-door coupes on the market - like the Audi A7 Sportback and BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo - Mercedes are unleashing their second generation CLS.
The new CLS sticks to the same formula as the original CLS, but with the styling updated to be more in-line with Mercedes' other offerings. To be honest there are some elements of the older car's style we prefer, like the trademark arcing style line which emanates from the front wheel arch and travels down the length of the car, and the more harmonious sweeping headlights and less upright grille. Overall the old CLS had a bit more grace than the new car.
The face of the 2012 CLS was inspired partially by the SLS AMG supercar, in particular the shape of the single-bar main grille. Another distinguishing feature of the front end is the LED headlights - which are the first in the world to offer all of the light functions using LED technology. The lights themselves are made up of 71 independent LED bulbs, giving them the flexibility to illuminate in a variety of different ways to suit the conditions.
Inside, the new CLS is as opulent and well put together as you'd expect. The cockpit features stylish dashboard which is a more sporty and technical looking than the previous generation, and it's the better for it. In place of the pillowy old four arm steering wheel is a stylish looking 3 spoke molded wheel. The center console is more appealing too, and the display screen has been moved higher up to make it more visible. Gone are the soft rounded contours of the old car's trim, and in their place are more contemporary angular lines which seem more space-age than old-age. The interior definitely appeals more to younger buyers.
Drivetrain or engineering information hasn't been released at this point. It won't be until the car is officially revealed at the 2010 Paris Motor Show (October 2nd - 17th) that all the details will be available.
